Features & Benefits

What Makes Outlast Q8 Log Oil Stand Out?

Outlast Q8 Log Oil is a one-stop solution for maintaining wood surfaces, offering a range of features and benefits that set it apart from other wood treatment products:

1. EPA Registered Preservative

Outlast Q8 Log Oil is EPA-registered preservative (EPA REG. NO. 81819-1)designed to protect against wood-ingesting insects like termites and prevent fungus and rot.  Very few products provide this level of protection.

2. Superior Water Resistance

Its formula creates a protective barrier that repels water, preventing rot, mold, and mildew from taking hold of your wood surfaces. This is especially critical for log homes exposed to varying weather conditions.  One coat of Outlast Q8 Log Oil is all that is needed; no additional top coat is required.

3. UV Protection

Outlast Q8 Log Oil colors contain UV inhibitors that protect wood from sun damage, reducing fading, cracking, and warping over time.

4. Enhanced Penetration

Unlike surface-only treatments, this product penetrates deeply into the wood fibers, ensuring long-lasting protection from within.

5. Stain and Maintenance Combination

It acts as a wood preservative and stain, offering color options while safeguarding your wood.

6. Easy Application

The oil-based formula makes it simple to apply with a brush or pump-style sprayer, making it a great option for both DIYers and professionals.

7. Easy Maintenance

The Outlast Q8 Log Oil is a nonfilm-forming product so you will never have to strip, sand, or media blast like other products that crack and peel.  When another coat is required, clean the surface and apply another coat.

8. Easy Cleanup

The Outlast Q8 Log Oil can be cleaned up with detergent and water or mineral spirits.

9. Controls Cracking and Checking

The Outlast Q8 Log Oil penetrates deep into the wood's cellular structure, helping to prevent cracking and checking. Some customers have even mentioned that smaller cracks have closed after applying the Oil.

10. VOC Compliant

Meets all state, federal, and local VOC regulations.  We can ship to all 50 states!

Outlast Q8 Log Oil Application Instructions

Applying Outlast Q8 Log Oil is a straightforward process, but following these steps ensures optimal results:

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Clean the wood thoroughly to remove dirt, mildew, or any previous treatments. Use a wood cleaner or a mild detergent.  We recommend the Outlast Kleenstart Cleaner.

  • Allow the wood to dry completely before applying the oil.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools

You’ll need:

  • Outlast Q8 Log Oil

  • Pump-style sprayer or brush.  Airless sprayers are not recommended due to atomization.

  • Drop cloths or tarps to protect surrounding areas

Step 3: Apply the Oil

  • Add optional NBS30 Insect Additive and M-1 Mildew Additive.

  • Shake or stir the product well before use and stir occasionally during use to keep pigments mixed.

  • Apply a generous coat of oil, starting at the bottom and work upwards.

  • Spray, brush, or roll.  For best results, use a pump-style sprayer with plastic tip.

  • Apply as much product as the wood will absorb in one coat.

Step 4: Clean Up

  • Cleaning up the equipment is unnecessary until the project is completed.

  • Once complete, clean with detergent and water or mineral spirits if desired

How to Determine Compatibility with a Pre-Existing Finish

If you currently have an existing finish and are trying to determine if the Outlast Q8 Log Oil will work on your wood, consider these two tests:

1.     Water Absorption Test:

Pour water onto the surface.

If the water is absorbed rather than beading up, the Outlast Q8 will likely be able to penetrate the surface.  Pressure washing with the Outlast Kleenstart Cleaner will typically be sufficient

2.     Fingernail Test:

Scratch the surface with your fingernail.

If the old finish can be scratched to bare wood, then pressure washing the surface should remove the surface finish.

Color Limitations: If the existing finish still matches the color of the prior finish wood, it may be difficult to remove it from knots, soffits, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Flaking or Shiny Finishes: If the finish is flaking or has a shiny appearance, it must be removed before applying the Outlast Q8.

Organic Oil-Based Finishes: Polymerizing stain sealer finishes that contain a significant amount of organic oils (like linseed oil), acrylics, or propylene glycol will eventually break down and become patchy. For optimal results, these finishes must be removed.

Once the wood preparation is finished, test it with the Outlast Sample Size to ensure it is suitably prepped for application.
