Kleenstart will clean mold and mildew and remove mill glaze. One quart makes 5-8 gallons and cleans up to 1200 square feet of surface area.

KleenStart is an oxygenated granular cleaner that mixes in hot or cold water. Mix it up, spray with a pump-up garden sprayer, leave it on for about 10 minutes, and rinse with a pressure washer. Kleenstart often does most of the scrubbing for you!

What is a wood preservative and how does it work?

A wood preservative is a specialized treatment designed to protect your logs from the relentless assault of wood-destroying organisms like fungi, termites, and powder post beetles. However, it’s important to note that wood preservatives target organisms that consume wood, not those that simply drill into it, like carpenter bees. By applying a trusted preservative such as Outlast Q8 Log Oil, you’re actively safeguarding your investment against mold, decay, and destructive pests, helping your log home stand strong for years to come.

What surfaces can it be used on?

Q8 Log Oil is appropriate for any exterior wood surface that allows penetration, including logs, siding, decks, fences, roofs, and timber frames.

How should I prepare the surface before application?

Ensure the wood surface is free of obstructions to penetration, including mill glaze, wax, dirt, and mildew. Appropriate cleaners, like Outlast KleenStart, can eliminate these. Existing coatings may require chemical removal or should be sanded or blasted off and then cleaned.

For the Outlast Q8 Log Oil to be effective, it must penetrate. If sanding is required to remove a previous coating, the wood may need to be washed with Outlast Kleenstart to re-open the pores. After washing, allow 3-5 days for the wood to dry before applying the Q8 Log Oil.

How is it applied?

The best method is to flood coat the wood using a pump sprayer, applying the oil until the wood can no longer absorb it. This ensures deep penetration into the wood cells. Below 50°F, Q8 Log Oil becomes too thick to pump through a sprayer and will require hand brushing. For brushing, use a high-quality staining brush designed for oil-based stains. Applying with an airless paint sprayer is not recommended. Airless sprayers tend to atomize the product, making it difficult to saturate the wood and decreasing its longevity.

Q8 Log Oil can be applied in a wide range of weather conditions, but certain conditions maximize its effectiveness. For optimal results, apply the oil when temperatures are between 50 and 90° F (10 and 32° C). This range ensures that the oil penetrates well and does not become too thick to pump through a sprayer. Below 50 degrees, Q8 Log Oil will require hand brushing instead, as it becomes too viscous for a pump sprayer.

Warm, dry weather is ideal as it enhances absorption and extends the time before retreatment is necessary. However, be cautious of rain within 36 hours of application, as it can cause pigment streaking. If streaking occurs, re-spray the surface with more product, let it sit for 15 minutes, and smooth out any streaks with a stiff paintbrush.

Apply as much as the wood will absorb. After application, clean your tools with dish detergent and warm water or mineral spirits to maintain their condition. This ensures that both your tools and your woodwork remain in excellent shape.

How many coats are recommended?

Apply one application to the point of refusal until the wood can no longer absorb the oil.

How often does it need to be reapplied?

Logs and Siding: Reapply on vertical surfaces within 24 months after the initial treatment, depending on temperature and moisture content, and then every 4 to 8 years thereafter.
Decks: Reapply as needed. Horizontal surfaces usually need more frequent treatment than vertical logs or siding. Reapplication is required when water no longer beads on the surface and the color begins to fade.
To ensure the best results and maintain safety, follow these precautions when applying the product:
1. Avoid Overapplication: Do not overapply the oil to horizontal walking surfaces. This helps to prevent slippery conditions and ensures a uniform finish.
2. Immediate Post-Application Care: After 15 minutes, wipe up any unabsorbed material.
3. Traffic Precautions: Treated surfaces can be slippery initially. Avoid heavy traffic until the product has fully cured to ensure safety and optimal absorption.

Is it suitable for interior use?

It is advisable not to use this for interior living spaces. However, as long as adequate ventilation is present, it may be suitable for non-living areas such as storage rooms or barns. The Outlast Interior product is a preferable choice for interior living environments.

Will it crack or peel over time?

No, it does not create a surface film; it absorbs into the wood and will not crack or peel.

What is the difference between Clear (00) and Natural Base (01) ?

Clear (00): This product contains no pigment. Due to its copper content, it initially appears greenish but becomes clear upon curing. Over time, this allows the wood to develop a natural gray patina.
Natural Base (01): Contains a subtle wood-tone pigment that offers UV protection and helps prolong the wood's color.

What are the coverage rates and available sizes?

It should be applied until refusal, covering roughly 150-175 square feet per gallon, depending on the wood type. New wood may have moisture levels up to 40% at its core, even if a moisture meter indicates less than 18% on the surface. As the internal moisture evaporates, it creates additional space within the cell pockets for Q8 to fill. Because oil is lighter than water, Q8 occupies the cell structure above the moisture-saturated interior. This mechanism allows interior moisture to escape more gradually and uniformly, thus minimizing the rapid moisture loss that can lead to cracking and splitting of the wood surface.

Coverage may decrease to about 50 square feet per gallon for old, dry weathered wood. However, a consistently maintained home with Q8 might only require about 300 square feet per gallon. Therefore, always apply the product until the point of refusal is reached.

What makes Q8 Log Oil different?

Q8 Log Oil is neither a coating nor a traditional stain; it does not create a film or skin on the surface. When the film coating fails, surface films eventually break down, leading to cracking and peeling. Because Q8 Log Oil is a non-film-forming product, it will never crack or peel.

Cracking and checking are other common issues, especially with new wood. Moisture loss causes wood to develop cracks and checks. Q8 Slows moisture loss and reduces cracking and checking.

Long-term maintenance does not require stripping, sanding, or media blasting. However, it is recommended that the surface be cleaned and another coat of Q8 Log Oil be applied as needed. Maintenance coats typically involve addressing the effects of the sun if the customer desires a color other than gray, as everything fades to gray in sunlight. A fresh application of Q8 adds more pigment to the surface's color and appearance.

Can I test before I purchase?

Yes, Outlast Q8 Log Oil Samples are available for purchase. We recommend testing the product on your wood, as colors can vary depending on wood types and conditions. For testing, apply the product in an inconspicuous area or to a sample piece of wood that matches the wood for your application. Apply as much oil as the wood will absorb in one coat. Does it help preserve the wood?

Wood preservatives render wood toxic to organisms that damage it, including powder post beetles, termites, and fungi. However, wood preservatives do not protect against non-wood-eating insects, such as carpenter bees, ants, and other wood-drilling insects; they only target those that ingest wood.

No top coat is required. Applying a clear top coat could complicate future maintenance, so it is not recommended. One coat provides all the protection needed.

How should you clean up after application?

After application, clean your tools with a grease-cutting detergent and warm water while the product is still fresh. Once the finish has cured, switch to paint thinner or mineral spirits for any necessary cleanup.
