Kleenstart will clean mold and mildew and remove mill glaze. One quart makes 5-8 gallons and cleans up to 1200 square feet of surface area.

What surfaces can Q8 Log Oil be used on?

Q8 Log Oil is appropriate for any exterior wood surface that allows penetration, including logs, siding, decks, fences, roofs, and timber frames.

How should I prepare the surface before application?

Ensure the wood surface is free of obstructions to penetration, including mill glaze, wax, dirt, or mildew. Appropriate cleaners like Outlast KleenStart can eliminate these. If there are existing coatings, they may require chemical removal or should be sanded or blasted off and then cleaned.

For the Outlast Q8 Log Oil to be effective, it must penetrate. If sanding is required to remove a previous coating, the wood may need to be washed with Outlast Kleenstart to re-open the pores. After washing, allow 3-5 days for the wood to dry before applying the Q8 Log Oil.

How is Q8 Log Oil applied?

The best method is to flood coat the wood using a pump sprayer, applying the oil until the wood can no longer absorb it. This ensures deep penetration into the wood cells. Below 50°F, Q8 Log Oil becomes too thick to pump through a sprayer and will require hand brushing. For brushing, use a high-quality staining brush designed for oil-based stains. Applying Outlast Q8 Log Oil with an airless paint sprayer is not recommended. Airless sprayers tend to atomize the product, making it difficult to saturate the wood and decreasing its longevity.

How many coats are recommended?

Apply one application to the point of refusal until the wood can no longer absorb the oil.

How often does Q8 Log Oil need to be reapplied?

• Logs and Siding: Reapply within 24 months after the initial treatment, depending on temperature and moisture content, and then every 4 to 8 years thereafter.

• Decks: Reapply as needed. Horizontal surfaces usually need more frequent treatment than vertical logs or siding. Reapplication is required when water no longer beads on the surface and the color begins to fade.

Is Q8 Log Oil suitable for interior use?

It is advisable not to use this for interior living spaces. However, it might be suitable for non-living areas such as storage rooms or barns, as long as adequate ventilation exists. The Outlast Interior product is a preferable choice for interior living environments.

Will Q8 Log Oil crack or peel over time?

No, Q8 Log Oil does not create a surface film; it absorbs into the wood and will not crack or peel.  

What is the difference between Clear (00) and Natural Base (01) Q8 Log Oil?

• Clear (00): This product contains no pigment. Due to its copper content, it initially appears greenish but becomes clear upon curing, allowing the wood to develop a natural gray patina over time.

• Natural Base (01): Contains a subtle wood-tone pigment that offers UV protection and helps prolong the wood's color.

What are the coverage rates for the Outlast Q8 Log Oil?

Outlast Q8 Log Oil should be applied until refusal, covering roughly 125-175 square feet per gallon, depending on the wood type. New wood may have moisture levels up to 40% at its core, even if a moisture meter indicates less than 18% on the surface. As the internal moisture evaporates, it creates additional space within the cell pockets for Q8 to fill. Because oil is lighter than water, Q8 occupies the cell structure above the moisture-saturated interior. This mechanism allows interior moisture to escape more gradually and uniformly, thus minimizing the rapid moisture loss that can lead to cracking and splitting of the wood surface. 

For old, dry weathered wood, coverage may decrease to about 50 square feet per gallon. A consistently maintained home with Q8 might only require about 300 square feet per gallon. Always apply the product until the point of refusal is reached.

What makes Q8 Log Oil different?

Q8 Log Oil is neither a coating nor a traditional stain, and it does not create a film or skin on the surface. Surface films eventually break down, leading to cracking and peeling when the film coating fails. Because Q8 Log Oil is a non-film forming product, it will never crack or peel. 

Cracking and checking are other common issues, especially with new wood.  Moisture loss in wood causes wood to develop cracks and checks.  Outlast Q8 Log Oil slows moisture loss, reducing cracking and checking. 

Long-term maintenance does not require stripping, sanding, or media blasting. It is recommended that the surface be cleaned and another coat of Q8 Log Oil is applied as needed. Maintenance coats typically involve addressing the effects of the sun if the customer desires any color other than gray since everything fades to gray in sunlight. A fresh application of Q8 adds more pigment for surface color and appearance.

Can I test the Q8 Log Oil before I purchase it?

Yes, Outlast Q8 Log Oil Samples are available for purchase. We recommend testing the product on your wood, as colors can vary depending on wood types and conditions. For testing, apply the product in an inconspicuous area or to a sample piece of wood that matches the wood for your application. Apply as much oil as the wood will absorb in one coat.  The color typically turns lighter as it cures.  Full-color appearance may take up to two weeks.

Does Q8 Log Oil help preserve the wood?

Wood preservatives render wood toxic to organisms that damage it, including powder post beetles, termites, and fungi. However, wood preservatives do not protect against non-wood-eating insects, such as carpenter bees, ants, and other wood-drilling insects; they only target those that ingest wood. 

Q8 Log Oil is an EPA-approved wood preservative that includes petroleum distillates and copper's metallic equivalent. Before applying Q8 Log Oil, a separate borate-based wood preservative is not Needed.

Very few products contain an actual preservative, like the Q8 Log Oil.

Does Q8 Log Oil protect against mold and mildew?

Yes, the Outlast Q8 Log Oil protects against mold and mildew. For homes in damp and very humid climates, which are more prone to mold and mildew growth, an additional mildew additive, the M-1 Mildew Additive, treats five gallons of Q8 Log Oil.

Does Q8 Log Oil protect against insects?

The Q8 Log Oil protects against powder post beetles and termites but does not safeguard against non-wood-eating insects like carpenter bees and ants. The NBS30 insect additive offers protection from wood-drilling insects that the Q8 Log Oil alone does not cover. To get this additional insect protection, one pint of NBS30 per five gallons of Q8 Log Oil is all that is needed.

Does the Q8 Log Oil need to be stored indoors during the winter?

Outlast Q8 Log Oil is freeze-thaw stable and does not need special storage in temperatures below freezing.  

Does Q8 Log Oil need a top coat?

No top coat is required over the Outlast Q8 Log Oil. Applying a clear top coat could complicate future maintenance, so it is not recommended. One coat of the Outlast Q8 Log Oil provides all the protection needed.

How Long Does Outlast Q8 Log Oil Last?

Outlast recommends that on vertical surfaces the Outlast Q8 Log Oil should be re-applied within 24 months of the initial application. Additional applications should be applied as needed, which is typically every 4-8 years. Horizontal surfaces such as decks should be re-treated every other year or annually if needed. Variables such as sun exposure will impact the re-application time.

Preparing the Surface

Great Preparation is the Key to Application Success!

Q8 Log Oil penetrates and protects. The surface must be porous free of mill glaze, dirt, and previous coatings. Outlast Kleenstart is recommended prior to the initial application of Q8 Log Oil and subsequent applications. The better the preparation of the wood the longer the Q8 Log Oil treatment will last.

Wood Preservative

Wood preservatives are toxic to wood damaging organisms like termites, powder post beetles, and fungus.

Q8 Log Oil is an EPA approved wood preservative so applications of a borate treatment is not necessary prior to applying Q8 Log Oil.

Insects

Wood preservatives do not protect against non wood eating insects. Ants, cockroaches, beetles, mites, spiders, fleas, ticks, silverfish, dirt daubers, bees and wasps will not crawl on, nest on or burrow through coatings treated with NBS 30 Additive.

Mold, Mildew, and Algae

Q8 Log Oil alone stops decay, mold, and fungi. Use Outlast Mold-Buster when additional protection is required to control surface mold, mildew, and algae growth on the coating. It is recommended for use with coatings applied in high humidity environments and for applications where mildew has been a problem in the past.

Applying Q8 Log Oil

Outlast Q8 Log Oil can be applied during a wide range of weather conditions. Q8 Log Oil will not penetrate as well on wet or cold logs/wood. Below 50 degrees, Q8 Log Oil will become too thick to pump through a pump sprayer and may require hand brushing. Streaking of pigment may result if it rains within 36 hours of treatment. Simply re-spray the surface with more product, let it sit for 15 minutes and smooth out any streaks with a stiff paintbrush. Apply as much Q8 Log Oil as the wood will absorb. Clean tools with dish detergent and warm water or mineral spirits.

Caulking and Chinking

As wood dries it is natural for cracking and checking to occur. It is recommended to fill any gaps larger that 1/4" with caulk. Cracks/checks less than 1/4" should be flooded with Q8 Log Oil.

If applying a sealant after Q8 Log Oil wait for it to cure which can be 4+ weeks depending on conditions. Curing time can vary with weather conditions. Q8 Log Oil can cure in 2 weeks with many warm and dry days. Low temperatures, humidity, and wet weather can lengthen the cure time to 4 weeks or more.

When time does not allow for proper curing time or there are concerns about adherence to the wood, the caulking/chinking should be done prior to applying Q8 Log Oil.

Samples and Testing

We always recommended performing a 1 coat color test. Samples are available for color testing. Wait 24 hours after applying a Q8 Log Oil sample before observing the color. The color will lighten as the product dries. Please Note: Q8 Log Oil is difficult to remove once it has been applied. Before doing a full application make sure that your color selection is correct, has a look you want, and a maintenance schedule you can manage. Wait 24 hours after applying a Q8 Log Oil sample, to make sure you are getting an accurate representation of true color.
